The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr. Waed Badhib, met on Thursday with Ms. Edem Wosorno, Director of Operations and Advocacy at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). They discussed a number of important issues related to the humanitarian situation in Yemen, including violations committed by the terrorist Houthi militia and their obstruction of humanitarian operations and activities in areas under their control.

On the sidelines of his participation in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development held in New York, Minister Badhib addressed the issue of detention and kidnapping of employees of international and local organizations by the Houthi militia. He stressed the role of the United Nations in protecting its staff and pressuring the militia to release them and ensure their safety. He pointed out the harm this behavior causes to humanitarian relief efforts and the direct threat it poses to the lives and safety of employees and their families.

The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation also highlighted the Houthi militia’s seizure of four Yemenia Airways aircraft and their crews, which deprived citizens from traveling for treatment and healthcare, prevented thousands of students from pursuing their education abroad, and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.

Dr. Badhib stressed the importance of relocating the headquarters of international organizations and agencies working in the humanitarian field to the interim capital, Aden. This would ensure the safety of employees and enhance the effectiveness of relief operations and the distribution of humanitarian aid to those in need in all governorates without discrimination. He also stressed the need to intensify efforts to mobilize international support and bridge the funding gap in the Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan.

Dr. Badhib pointed out the importance of transitioning from humanitarian interventions to development work to contribute to improving services, alleviating poverty, and achieving early recovery.
