On Tuesday, official talks were held in the Russian capital, Moscow, between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Shaya’ Al-Zindani, and the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov. The talks addressed areas of cooperation between the two friendly countries and the latest developments in Yemen and the region.
Minister Al-Zindani emphasized that Yemeni-Russian relations are witnessing positive developments through the formation of the joint committee, the activation of several bilateral agreements, and the move towards signing new cooperation agreements in various economic fields. He reiterated the Yemeni government’s keenness to develop cooperation horizons with the Russian Federation in a way that benefits both friendly countries.
The Foreign Minister praised the Russian government’s supportive stance towards the Presidential Leadership Council, the Yemeni government, and people at the international level, and its efforts to achieve peace in Yemen. He also appreciated the efforts made by their brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman to reach a roadmap, the implementation of which was hampered by the escalation of the Houthi militias in the Red Sea.
Minister Al-Zindani pointed out that the ongoing escalation by the Houthi militias in the Red Sea and their targeting of international shipping lanes have negatively impacted the movement of international trade and the global economy. It has also threatened the marine environment due to their continuous targeting of oil tankers and ships. He stressed the need for the international community to take strong stances and support the Yemeni government in its efforts to end the war and achieve peace.
The Foreign Minister also touched upon the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the importance of playing an active role in ending the genocide being carried out by the Israeli occupation army against civilians. He stressed the need to work towards implementing an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire of the Israeli aggression and ending the war in Gaza. He commended the Russian government’s stance and its support for the Palestinian people.
For his part, the Russian Foreign Minister affirmed the strength of Russian-Yemeni relations and his country’s keenness to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
The two sides agreed to enhance and develop bilateral cooperation in the scientific, technical, cultural, energy, agriculture and fisheries sectors. They also agreed on the convening of the joint committee between the two countries next month, which was agreed upon during the state visit of Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak to Moscow last February.
The Russian Foreign Minister indicated that Russia has decided to increase the number of scholarships for Yemeni students to study in Russia in various fields and disciplines.
The talks were followed by a press conference for the two ministers, in which they spoke about bilateral relations, common issues, and positions related to developments and the latest situation in Yemen and the region.
