The Republic of Yemen participated today, Monday, in the opening session of the 71st session of the Trade and Development Board (UNCTAD), held at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, with a delegation headed by the Permanent Representative of Yemen to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Ali Majour.

The session discusses several pivotal issues related to global economic development, with a focus on the challenges facing developing countries in light of the current international economic conditions, and strengthening dialogue between member states and exchanging experiences on how to enhance economic growth and achieve global prosperity.

In Yemen’s speech delivered at the session, Dr. Majour stressed the importance of confronting the challenges posed by climate change and its repercussions on Yemen, where floods have swept away entire villages and displaced more than five hundred thousand people. He pointed out that these disasters not only pose a threat to people’s lives and property but also affect economic and agricultural infrastructure. He called on the international community, especially the major industrialized countries that bear the greatest responsibility for emissions causing climate change, to intensify efforts to support developing and least developed countries in adapting to these challenges and compensating for damages.

He also touched upon the burdens of increasing debt on many countries, stressing the need to find practical solutions to alleviate these burdens, including debt restructuring and facilitating access to international financing.

Majour referred to the attacks launched by the terrorist Houthi militias on commercial ships and their significant impact on international navigation, and the increased suffering of the Yemeni people due to the rise in prices of basic commodities as a result of the doubling of shipping costs.

Ambassador Majour reiterated Yemen’s keenness to enhance cooperation with its international and regional partners to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, develop local capacities in the fields of trade and investment, and contribute to economic diversification and the creation of new job opportunities.

It is worth noting that the Trade and Development Board is the main body of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, which is concerned with discussing global economic and development issues and making recommendations related to promoting trade and sustainable development.
