On Tuesday, in Washington, D.C., the Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Qasim Buhaibeh, discussed with the executive directors for global health, women’s and child health, and nutrition at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), ways to enhance joint cooperation and opportunities to boost support for the health sector.

Minister Buhaibeh praised the level of partnership with USAID, especially in programs related to women’s health, child health, reproductive health, midwifery, and community health, including support in the field of vaccines and enhancing the technical capacities of the information sector. He emphasized the importance of keeping support for Yemen’s health sector as a priority on USAID’s agenda.

The Health Minister pointed out the importance of focusing on the sustainability of support for the health sector in Yemen, enhancing its capabilities, and equipping it with expertise, equipment, and basic infrastructure. This includes establishing a midwifery program and community health worker program, creating an electronic training platform for medical staff to benefit from local and foreign expertise, facilitating communication with health workers on the ground, and supporting governmental health institutes to build and develop their capabilities.

The Health Minister also expressed his condemnation of the terrorist Houthi militia’s practices against relief sector workers, attempting to falsify facts regarding the role and contributions of regional and international humanitarian and development partners over many decades, particularly USAID and its positive role in supporting Yemen and the health sector.

For their part, the executive directors at USAID praised the efforts of the Ministry of Health to improve the health sector’s situation and the level of cooperation in launching and managing vital programs like vaccination campaigns, and joining international programs to deal with emergencies and health threats, despite the significant challenges. They confirmed that supporting Yemen, particularly the health sector, is among USAID’s priorities.
