Sultan Al-Arada, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Marib, emphasized the importance of concerted official and societal efforts to protect Yemen’s antiquities and preserve its cultural heritage, considering them part of Yemen’s identity and a globally significant human heritage.
During his meeting with Ahmed Batayeh, President of the General Organization for Antiquities and Museums, in the presence of Ali Al-Fatimi, Deputy Governor of Marib, Al-Arada pointed out the potential for antiquities and museums to become an important economic resource if they are cared for, protected, and developed. He highlighted the importance of adopting a strategic plan to preserve antiquities and civilization heritage in our country, contributing to raising community awareness about the significance of antiquities and cultural heritage.
Al-Arada praised the outcomes of the first consultative meeting for the protection of cultural heritage organized by the Organization in Marib in October of last year, stressing the necessity of implementing these outcomes to enhance the protection of antiquities from vandalism and natural deterioration.
In this context, he directed the leadership of the local authority in Marib to coordinate with the Organization and work together to implement means of protecting archaeological sites, foremost among them the Awwam Temple, the Baran Temple, the Marib Dam, and the Old City of Marib, which was recently inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List, and to complete the necessary constructions at the province’s museum to properly preserve and display archaeological pieces.
