Member of the Presidential Leadership Council, Major General Aidaros Al-Zubaidi, called on the international community to recognize the need for a collective effort to empower the Presidential Leadership Council to end the chaos and violence practiced by the Houthis. He urged everyone to work together to end the humanitarian suffering and address the worsening economic conditions faced by our people. He pointed out that these steps would allow us to find a path towards a comprehensive political process led by Yemenis and sponsored regionally and internationally to ensure a sustainable political solution.

Al-Zubaidi emphasized in his speech before the Security Council in a high-level open discussion session on (Leadership for Peace: United in Respect for the UN Charter in Pursuit of a Secure Future), the necessity of containing the threat posed by the Houthis to global, regional, and Yemeni security, and sending a clear message that the Houthis’ violence and tyranny cannot continue unpunished.

He also highlighted the need for a collective effort to empower the Presidential Leadership Council to end the chaos and violence practiced by the Houthis, and to work collectively to end the humanitarian suffering and address the deteriorating economic conditions faced by our people. He indicated that these steps would lead us to a path towards a comprehensive political process led by Yemenis and sponsored regionally and internationally to ensure a sustainable political solution.

Al-Zubaidi said, “Leadership for peace starts from this hall and it is undoubtedly the responsibility and task of the Security Council, but often, it lacks the necessary political will to fulfill its responsibilities, leading to exacerbated conflicts which spread, and this is what is happening in Yemen.”

He added, “It has been ten years since the conflict in our country began, during which we lost hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, and millions are on the brink of famine due to Houthi terrorism, where women and children have been at the forefront of this suffering, including humanitarian and UN workers who have faced arrest and forced disappearance, and terrorist group activities have increased due to the lack of international political will to end the conflict.”

Member of the Leadership Council touched upon the implications in the Red Sea due to the Houthi militia attacks against maritime security and international trade, noting that this is a result of the failure to end the conflict and not dealing seriously with such practices. He confirmed that the current situation in our country is no longer acceptable, and our people’s interest lies in ending the conflict and finding a permanent solution, which is a common interest with our regional allies and the international community.

He pointed out that securing peace in our country requires effective and collaborative leadership at the international, regional, and local levels to find a comprehensive approach and sufficient momentum to establish peace, expressing his confidence that collective work from this hall can achieve the fair future our people deserve.

Major General Al-Zubaidi also referenced the UN Secretary-General’s speech at the Future Summit, and the need for sustainable solutions to global conflicts, a vision we should all support, stressing the need for a new comprehensive approach to end the conflict in Yemen and restore the peace our people deserve.

He said, “For a long time in our country’s troubled history, issues and parties that should be most important in determining our future have been marginalized, foremost among them, resolving the Southern issue which was agreed to have a special negotiation framework in the Gulf Cooperation Council consultations in Riyadh in 2022. There’s also importance in representing the voices of the youth, women, and minorities, as sustainable peace can only be achieved through an inclusive political process that includes these issues and parties.”
