Member of the Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi, affirmed the Republic of Yemen’s commitment to transitioning towards renewable energy, stressing the necessity for the international community to achieve the goals of this transition.

During his participation, on Wednesday, in the round table titled (Energy: Enhancing Climate Change Mitigation Measures) within the activities of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi called on the international community to provide financial and technical support to Yemen and developing countries to accelerate the process of transitioning to renewable energy, including financing nationally determined contributions and implementing long-term clean development strategies.

Dr. Al-Alimi pointed out that Yemen has taken important steps in promoting the use of renewable energy, especially solar energy, which has become a refuge for many families during the years of war. He reviewed major projects under implementation, such as the 120-megawatt solar power plant in Aden provided by the brothers in the United Arab Emirates, noting the need for greater support to meet the increasing demand for energy.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi stressed the importance of technology transfer and building national capacities to achieve a real and sustainable transition, expressing his hope that the COP29 conference would contribute to renewing the commitments of developed countries to their financial and technical pledges to support the least developed countries and achieve a just transition to renewable energy.

The member of the Leadership Council pointed to the importance of the conference in strengthening climate efforts and striving to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. He stressed that the transition to clean energy is an urgent necessity to build a safe and sustainable future, and that achieving it remains a major challenge for least developed countries like Yemen, which suffers from limited resources.
