The Permanent Representative of Yemen to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Ali Majour, discussed on Wednesday with the United States Ambassador to the Human Rights Council, Michele Taylor, the draft resolution submitted by Yemen under item ten regarding providing technical assistance and capacity building.
During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 57th session of the Human Rights Council being held in Geneva, Switzerland, the two sides affirmed that supporting the resolution is a fundamental factor in strengthening Yemen’s capacities in protecting human rights.
The meeting focused on the common challenges facing the international community in promoting and protecting human rights in light of the ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises in several regions around the world. They expressed their optimism about what can be achieved through international cooperation in strengthening human rights, and continuing coordination and joint work during the current session of the Human Rights Council and beyond.
Ambassador Majour stressed his country’s need for technical assistance to ensure its ability to fulfill its human rights obligations.
The US Ambassador praised the tireless efforts made by the Yemeni government to promote and protect human rights, the space for freedom enjoyed by civil society organizations and human rights activists, and the vital role played by the National Commission of Inquiry in monitoring and documenting various violations.
The US Ambassador also expressed her condemnation of the serious violations committed by the Houthi militias against humanitarian aid workers and UN personnel, and their targeting of commercial ships in the Red Sea. She reiterated her country’s support for the draft resolution submitted by Yemen under item ten regarding providing technical assistance and capacity building.
