Media Analysis on Yemeni Affairs – August 12, 2024

The news monitoring covered the current events on the Yemeni arena for the period (3 August – 9 August) in the international, Arab and local media. The media witnessed great coverage of various events, especially in the political, humanitarian, and military sides.

The media coverage of the international, Arab and local media of the Yemeni issue will be highlighted by explaining the complete frames that have been addressed and providing the numbers and statistical data for what has been monitored.

1. International media:

News monitoring for international media was carried out during the period (3 August – 9 August). The monitoring covered 55 media outlets and 131 news articles, as shown in Table (1).

The international media covered the Yemeni issue in a large way this week, with great emphasis on the political and humanitarian aspects, and the military aspect in particular. The number of articles that were monitored in the international media reached 131 news articles. Where the political side received 30 news articles, 23%. The humanitarian side received 9 news articles, 7%. The military side was covered with 65 articles, a rate of 50%. Then the rest of the frames come as shown in the table below.

1. Arab media

News monitoring for Arab media was carried out during the period (3 August – 9 August). The monitoring covered 46 media outlets and 121 news articles, as shown in Table (3).

The Arab media covered the Yemeni issue extensively this week. The number of articles that were monitored during this week reached 121 news articles. Where the political side received 11 articles, at a rate of 9%. The humanitarian framework received 18 articles, or 15%. As for the military framework, it received 45 articles, or 37%. Then the rest of the frames come as shown in the table below.

• Local Media

During the period (3 August – 9 August), local media were searched in 32 media outlets, and 215 news articles were monitored, as shown in Table (5).

The local media covered the events on the Yemeni arena, and 215 articles were monitored in various aspects during the period (3 August – 9 August), the political side monitored 45 articles, with a percentage of 21%. As for the military side, it received less media attention than the political side. 47 articles were monitored on the military side with a percentage of 22%. As for the humanitarian side, 32 articles were monitored, with a percentage of 15%. The rest of the frames are as shown in the table and graph as follows:

Media Analysis

International, Arab, and local media covered the Yemeni file in all its political, humanitarian, military, economic, etc. aspects. The political media covered Abdulmalik al-Houthi, leader of the Ansar Allah group (Houthis), vowing a “military response” to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in an attack blamed on Israel. The US Navy’s giant nuclear aircraft carrier task forces operating in the Red Sea and surrounding region are incapable of fully stopping the Ansarullah group’s forces in Yemen from threatening international shipping, US Fifth Fleet Commander Vice Admiral George Wikoff said. As for the humanitarian aspect, it received widespread coverage due to the worsening humanitarian crisis, as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) announced that thousands of families have been displaced due to floods that have hit three governorates in western Yemen in the past few days. The military aspect also received broader media coverage than in previous weeks. Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesman for the Ansar Allah forces, said in a statement that “the naval and missile forces carried out a joint military operation targeting the Groton ship in the Gulf of Aden, with a number of ballistic missiles, and the hit was accurate.” Yahya Saree added that “the air defense forces were able to shoot down an American ‘MQ-9’ aircraft while it was carrying out hostile acts in the airspace of Saada Governorate, with a locally made surface-to-air missile.” The Yemeni Ansarullah group announced the targeting of the American destroyers “Cole” and “Laboon,” as well as targeting the “Contship Ono” ship in the Red Sea, with a number of drones and ballistic missiles.
