Media Analysis on Yemeni Affairs – September 2, 2024

The news monitoring covered the current events on the Yemeni arena for the period (24 August – 30 August) in the international, Arab and local media. The media witnessed great coverage of various events, especially in the political, humanitarian, and military sides.

The media coverage of the international, Arab and local media of the Yemeni issue will be highlighted by explaining the complete frames that have been addressed and providing the numbers and statistical data for what has been monitored.

1. International media:

News monitoring for international media was carried out during the period (24 August – 30 August). The monitoring covered 53 media outlets and 128 news articles, as shown in Table (1).

The international media covered the Yemeni issue in a large way this week, with great emphasis on the political and humanitarian aspects, and the military aspect in particular. The number of articles that were monitored in the international media reached 128 news articles. Where the political side received 31 news articles, 24%. The humanitarian side received 25 news articles, 20%. The military side was covered with 44 articles, a rate of 34%. Then the rest of the frames come as shown in the table below.

1. Arab media

News monitoring for Arab media was carried out during the period (24 August – 30 August). The monitoring covered 46 media outlets and 134 news articles, as shown in Table (3).

The Arab media covered the Yemeni issue extensively this week. The number of articles that were monitored during this week reached 134 news articles. Where the political side received 32 articles, at a rate of 24%. The humanitarian framework received 35 articles, or 26%. As for the military framework, it received 19 articles, or 19%. Then the rest of the frames come as shown in the table below.

• Local Media

During the period (24 August – 30 August), local media were searched in 32 media outlets, and 218 news articles were monitored, as shown in Table (5).

The local media covered the events on the Yemeni arena, and 218 articles were monitored in various aspects during the period (24 August – 30 August), the political side monitored 60 articles, with a percentage of 28%. As for the military side, it received less media attention than the political side. 36 articles were monitored on the military side with a percentage of 17%. As for the humanitarian side, 47 articles were monitored, with a percentage of 22%. The rest of the frames are as shown in the table and graph as follows:

Media Analysis

International, Arab, and local media covered the Yemeni file in all its political, humanitarian, military, economic, etc. aspects. The political media covered Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov holding a meeting with his Yemeni counterpart, Shaya’ Al-Zindani, in the Russian capital, Moscow, where the two ministers discussed ways to develop bilateral relations between the two countries and the situation in Yemen and the region. Additionally, Yemen’s Ansar Allah group (Houthis) on Sunday congratulated Hezbollah on the “major and courageous” attack it launched against Israel in response to the assassination of one of its prominent leaders, Fuad Shukr, late last month, stressing that the “Yemeni response is coming.” As for the humanitarian aspect, it witnessed widespread coverage due to the worsening humanitarian crisis, as Thirteen people have died and 14 others remain missing after a boat capsized off Yemen on Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Sunday.  The military aspect also witnessed broader media coverage than in previous weeks, as the military media covered, The British Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announcing two incidents off the coasts of the cities of Aden and Mokha in southwestern Yemen. The agency stated in a report on the “X” platform that it “received a report of an incident 55 nautical miles southeast of Aden.” In a subsequent statement, the agency announced that it “received a report of an incident 61 nautical miles southeast of the city of Mokha, which overlooks the Bab al-Mandab strait.” On Thursday, the “Ansar Allah” group (Houthis) announced that they are continuing preparations to respond to the bombing of the port of Hodeidah in western Yemen last July, stating that “the timing will be surprising for Israel.”
