On Tuesday, His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, met in New York with Ms. Anna Bjerde, World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations.
The discussion focused on areas of bilateral cooperation and ways to strengthen the existing partnership between the government and the World Bank in economic and developmental aspects, institutional capacity building, and promoting the progress made in the path of comprehensive reform. Additionally, the discussion covered the international support needed to mitigate the humanitarian impact of the financial crisis exacerbated by Houthi terrorist attacks on oil facilities and international shipping lanes.
His Excellency the President commended World Bank’s development interventions in Yemen, especially its funding for a number of vital projects in health, education, agriculture, fisheries, food security, and social protection sectors.
President Al-Alimi praised the World Bank’s interventions in building and strengthening institutional capacities, supporting the Central Bank of Yemen, promoting economic growth and strengthening private sector resilience. Moreover, He noted the longstanding partnership between the two sides.
The President noted the opening of a representative office of the World Bank in the interim capital, Aden. He further stressed the government’s keenness to providing all necessary facilities for international institutions and organizations to effectively carry out their tasks across the country.
The President reiterated request for the World Bank to inject its funds through the Central Bank. Moreover, he reiterated request to help Yemeni government in accessing to funding for green economy and climate change.
President Al-Alimi was briefed by the World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations on the current portfolio projects being implemented by the World Bank Group to help in recovery, achieve financial and economic stability, and peace building. His Excellency was also briefed on the Bank’s developmental intervention policy during the upcoming phase.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Shaya Mohsin Al-Zindani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and Mr. Mohammed Al-Hadrami, Yemen’s Ambassador to the United States.
