His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, met on Monday, with Ms. Joyce Msuya, the UN Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
The meeting addressed humanitarian interventions and emergency relief efforts led by UN agencies in Yemen. Additionally, it discussed coordinated efforts with the international community to mobilize the funding needed for the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), which has so far received only 28% of the required funding.
The meeting touched upon grave human rights violations by the terrorist Houthi militias, including the recent abductions campaign targeting dozens of activists and international staff.
The president of the Presidential Leadership Council reiterated the Council’s and the government’s commitment to providing all necessary facilities to humanitarian organizations, in addition to enhancing the role of these organizations in alleviating the humanitarian suffering exacerbated by the Houthi terrorist attacks on oil facilities and international shipping lanes.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council urged UN relief agencies to move their offices to the interim capital, Aden, to ensure the safety of their staff. Moreover, He called for transferring their funding through the Central Bank of Yemen, which would help strengthen the national currency and dry up the sources of the war economy run by the Houthi militias and their affiliated terrorist organizations.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Shaya’e bin Mohsen Al-Zindani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and Ambassador Abdullah Al-Sa’adi, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
