His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, president of the Presidential Leadership Council, met on Monday in New York with Mr. Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, which is to be launched tomorrow, Tuesday.

The meeting touched upon UNDP’s developmental interventions across various sectors, in addition to the coordinated efforts with the international community to mobilize additional funding for more sustainable and effective programs. These programs aim to alleviating Yemeni people’s suffering, caused by the Iran-backed Houthi terrorist militias.

During the meeting, the UN official briefed the President of the Presidential Leadership Council and the two Council members on UNDP’s interventions, especially in the agricultural and fisheries sectors.

The UN officials cited the UNDP’s interventions, which included the sectors of water, electricity and clean energy, education, roads, health services. Additionally, these interventions include supporting livelihoods, responding to food security challenges, addressing climate changes’ effects and improving the efficiency of Yemeni seaports, enhancing institutional and economic resilience, and promoting comprehensive justice.

The UN officials noted the readiness of the economic recovery plan for Yemen, revive cash production chains of the two crops of coffee and honey in addition to the infrastructure projects funded by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.

The President of the Presidential Leadership Council and the two Council members praised UNDP’s role over the past decades and its valued interventions to alleviate the impact of the war ignited by the Iran-backed Houthi terrorist militias.

President Al-Alimi also praised the UN’s plans to move from relief to sustainable development. His Excellency commended UNDP’s move regarding the opening of its office in the interim capital, Aden.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Shaya’ bin Mohsen Al-Zindani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates; Ambassador Abdullah Al-Sa’adi, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Mr. Abdallah Al-Dardari, UNDP’s Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States.
