Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak inspected, on Sunday, the ongoing work for the rehabilitation of the fishing port in the Hajif area of the temporary capital Aden, in preparation for reactivating its operations and resuming work as one of the largest fish landing and export ports in the region.

The Prime Minister was briefed by the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem al-Socotri, along with several port officials, on the ongoing efforts to lift and salvage sunken ships at the port. So far, 10 out of 22 ships have been salvaged, with approximately 250 meters out of a total of 530 meters cleared. They also discussed the cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme and German support in rehabilitating the port.

They explained that the studies, designs, and estimated costs for rehabilitating the central workshop and the central refrigerator have been completed, which are essential components of the fishing port. Additionally, an assessment of the current condition of the dock has been completed, along with a technical evaluation for the port and infrastructure rehabilitation.

Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak toured the port’s dock and its service facilities, emphasizing the government’s support for the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to revive the activities of the fishing port, and to resume its services in receiving fishing vessels, handling loading and unloading operations, and maintaining fishing equipment.

The port renovation and development project includes rehabilitating the infrastructure of key facilities such as the port dock with a capacity of (530m), an ice factory, a refrigeration storage with a capacity of (2000 tons), a fish processing center, the administrative building, seven storage units, energy systems, and the central workshop.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of completing the rehabilitation works of the fishing port, enhancing its capabilities, and contributing to sustainable development in the fisheries sector, which would reflect positively on the economic situation and food security.
