Dr. Qasem Buhaibh, Minister of Public Health and Population, met Thursday in the interim capital Aden with Dr. Arturo Pesigan, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Yemen. They discussed a number of health-related issues, areas of coordination and joint work between the Ministry and the organization, and ways to advance them.

The meeting addressed the importance of the health sector’s preparedness for various health emergencies, including the declaration of monkeypox as a global health emergency due to its spread in Africa. They discussed strengthening health ports, providing testing solutions for the disease in central laboratories, and enhancing surveillance, awareness, and knowledge about it.

The meeting also touched on the impacts of climate change, floods, and heavy rains on a number of governorates and the health response to them. This included providing the Ministry of Health with the necessary resources to confront the increasing risks of diseases such as acute watery diarrhea and cholera. The meeting also explored the possibilities of mobilizing efforts to combat these diseases, identifying priorities for joint work, and preparing for a high-level meeting with donors to support the health sector.
