Vienna – The Republic of Yemen participated on Friday in the meetings of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with a delegation headed by Yemen’s Ambassador to Vienna and its Permanent Representative to the Agency, Haitham Shujauddin.
The meeting discussed topics related to nuclear safety and security, the Agency’s performance report, nuclear science and technology, the application of safeguards in Korea and Syria, Israeli nuclear capabilities, and the situation in Ukraine.
During the discussion on verification and monitoring in Iran under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 of 2015, Ambassador Shujauddin stressed in Yemen’s statement that Iran had violated the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. He reiterated Yemen’s absolute rejection of acts of maritime piracy and attacks carried out by the terrorist Houthi militia, with full support from the Iranian regime, in Yemeni territorial waters in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. These actions, he said, only benefit Iran and pose a serious threat to international navigation, peace, and security.
He pointed out that the Houthi attacks have led to the militarization of the Red Sea, harming the freedom of global trade and the peoples of the region and the world. They have also deepened the humanitarian crisis for the Yemeni people and increased the economic burdens on Yemen and many countries around the world. He called for support for the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government in the face of these threats.
In his speech, Ambassador Shujauddin also touched on the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, and the recent escalation in the Gaza Strip. He reiterated Yemen’s strong condemnation of the targeting of unarmed civilians and called on the international community to take a firm stance that compels Israel to respect international humanitarian law and immediately open safe humanitarian corridors.
He stressed the need to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid and medical supplies without restrictions to alleviate the humanitarian disaster and prevent it from worsening. He emphasized that the only solution to the conflict is the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
