The Republic of Yemen participated in the opening of the 57th session of the Human Rights Council, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday. Yemen’s delegation was headed by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Ali Majour.

In the first session, the participating delegations listened to the High Commissioner’s annual report on the human rights situation in all countries. The report stressed that stopping the Israeli war on Gaza and preventing a regional war are absolute and urgent priorities.

The session addressed the violations committed by the Houthi militias against UN personnel and humanitarian workers, warning of their repercussions and calling for them to be addressed.

Over five weeks, the session will discuss reports submitted by the UN General Secretariat, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, human rights experts, and other bodies. These reports cover a range of important human rights issues in about 50 countries.

The Council will also hold 20 interactive dialogues with mandate holders under special procedures. It will consider 32 draft resolutions, including a resolution on technical assistance and capacity building for Yemen in the field of human rights under item ten.
