The Republic of Yemen participated on Monday in the opening session of the 75th meeting of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with a delegation headed by Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Ali Majawar.
Ambassador Majawar addressed in his speech during the session the challenges facing Yemen due to ongoing conflicts and natural disasters that have led to the displacement of millions of citizens, both internally and externally. He emphasized the necessity of enhancing international efforts to provide necessary assistance to the displaced and refugees, and to offer technical and financial support to countries facing multiple reasons for displacement like Yemen.
Dr. Majawar explained that Yemen has seen an increase in the number of internally displaced persons, where many families were forced to leave their homes due to deteriorating security conditions and scarcity of natural resources caused by negative climate change impacts and atmospheric depressions, alongside an economic crisis that significantly affected the livelihoods of citizens. He pointed out that these multifaceted crises require enhanced international cooperation to provide necessary support and a swift response to the needs of refugees and the displaced.
Ambassador Majawar also highlighted the reduction in support provided by the High Commissioner’s office to alleviate the suffering of the affected in Yemen, stressing the importance of expanding the scope of assistance to include providing basic services like shelter, food, education, and healthcare for the displaced and refugees, and supporting host communities that receive large numbers of refugees and bear additional pressures.
Dr. Majawar expressed hope that discussions during the 57th session would lead to decisions supporting countries suffering from displacement crises and help in finding practical and sustainable solutions to these challenges.
