The Republic of Yemen participated yesterday, Monday, in the activities of the Sixth Arab Water Forum, which is organized by the Arab Water Council in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi. Yemen’s delegation was headed by the Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi.

The first day of the forum, held under the patronage of the League of Arab States, witnessed three high-level dialogue sessions on the threats of political instability to water security in the Arab region, addressing emerging regional water challenges, and sustainable financing for water and climate change projects.

Minister Al-Sharjabi reviewed the water challenges in Yemen and the government’s efforts to improve sustainable access to water. He stressed that water scarcity poses an existential challenge to Yemen and the Arab region, and affecting the energy, food, and social security sectors in Yemen, which has been suffering from the ravages of war for nine years.

The Minister of Water affirmed that the challenges related to water in the coming years will become more urgent in light of the growing demand for water and the scarcity of resources in the region. He pointed out that climate change and the increase in future demand for water have necessitated more discussion, exchange of ideas, and joint work to build future capabilities capable of facing and overcoming challenges.

The forum, which lasts for three days, focuses on water scarcity in the Arab world, the depletion of water resources, and the search for ways and means to produce water from sustainable sources.
