The Republic of Yemen participated yesterday, Monday, in the proceedings of the Water Governance and Desalination Conference held in The Hague, Netherlands, with a delegation led by the Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi.

The conference, spanning over four days, discusses numerous topics, scientific studies, and professional activities related to integrated water resources management, training, capacity building, and seawater desalination.

The Minister of Water and Environment emphasized that developing effective policies and building institutional capacities form the foundation for achieving desired improvements, as well as exploring opportunities for enhancing partnerships between the public and private sectors. He expressed hope that this visit would contribute to establishing a tangible action plan that includes defining tasks, responsibilities, and milestones to continue developing and implementing Yemen’s roadmap for water management and desalination.

He pointed out that this conference comes at a critical time when Yemen faces significant challenges in water resources management, especially given the difficult circumstances the country is going through. He clarified that water governance and desalination are at the forefront of the ministry’s priorities, particularly in Aden province, which exemplifies the water challenges faced.

Minister Al-Sharjabi expressed his aspiration for a deeper understanding of the water management systems implemented in the Netherlands, which are considered a global model in water resources management, and to leverage this model to develop strategies for improving water management in Aden, thereby enhancing the ability to adapt to water scarcity challenges and provide potable water.
